This boat however, is an exceptional one. The “Green Dragon”. She is an ex-Volvo Ocean Race yacht, designed and built by a leading racing yacht shipyard, Mc Conaghy Boats. It was built for 2008-09 campaign, she was skippered by Ian Walker, winner of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011. After some years of “retirement” and event-type of sailing, she was brought back to her primary life – sea racing by the current owner and skipper, Johannes.
The Volvo Open 70 yachts are often considered to be the fastest monohull boats ever built. Those boats in 2005 the replaced Volvo 60 type yachts, sailed in Volvo Ocean Race since 1993. “Green Dragon” represents the 2nd generation of Volvo Open 70, improved and faster compared to her predecessors. The yacht has a canting keel, driven by a hydraulic machinery, allowing to pivot the underwater ballast up to 40 degrees for increased stability and speed.
She turns into an ultimate winning machine, when in hands of a skilled skipper and a motivated crew. Just recently with us on board, she won the Heineken Regatta in St Martin and successfully competed in Le Voilles de St Barth. After the 2018 Caribbean regatta “tour”, we sailed her back to Europe which was an amazing speed cruise across the Atlantic, with speed reaching (with moderate winds) 25 knots.
